Eugene Durieu

"Draped Female Nude"

This photograph is a series of many that Eugene Durieu completed while working with painter, Eugene Delacroix. The studies are considered very influential for early nude photography.  The model is thought to be professional, and her turning away from the camera is part of a carefully thought out scene.  Durieu had little contribution in the photograph's composition. He was the operator who handeled the camera, while Delacroix handled the scene. The photograph has a modern tone with its successful lighting and simple concept. Few of Dureiu's prints outside of the nude series have been found and documented.
